Walk under most older Colorado homes and you'll find pink fiberglass batts stapled up between the floor joists — if they're even still up there and not sagging on the ground. That's the old way of insulating a crawlspace, and it's the wrong assembly for a sealed, encapsulated space. Here's why closed-cell spray foam has become the standard for crawlspace foundation walls instead.
There's an important distinction that trips up a lot of homeowners: insulating the floor joists and insulating the foundation walls are two completely different strategies, and they don't belong in the same crawlspace.
Vented crawlspace (old approach): insulation goes between the floor joists, because the crawlspace itself stays cold and unconditioned, separated from the house by that layer of batts.
Encapsulated crawlspace (current standard): insulation goes on the foundation walls instead. The crawlspace itself becomes part of the home's conditioned envelope — sealed, insulated at the perimeter, and controlled with a dehumidifier.
Closed-cell spray foam is what makes the second approach work.
Batt insulation slows heat transfer but does nothing to stop air movement. Closed-cell foam expands to fill every gap and adheres directly to the wall, creating a continuous air barrier and thermal barrier at the same time. In a crawlspace, air sealing is just as important as the R-value — uncontrolled air leakage is what lets humidity and cold air in around a barrier's edges.
Closed-cell foam has a closed cellular structure that doesn't absorb water the way fiberglass or open-cell foam can. In a crawlspace environment where some ambient humidity is always present, that matters.
Fiberglass batts on a wall eventually sag, fall, or get displaced. Spray foam bonds directly to the surface and stays there.
The rim joist — where the foundation wall meets the floor framing — is one of the biggest air leak points in most homes and is easy to miss with batt insulation. Spray foam wraps around it cleanly as part of the same application.
This is where a lot of jobs go wrong. Spray foam coverage is often sold and applied by the inch, but the number that actually matters is the R-value. Colorado's Front Range sits in Climate Zone 5, and the standard requirement for continuous insulation on encapsulated crawlspace walls is R-15.
Closed-cell foam provides roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch, which means hitting R-15 typically requires about 2.5 inches of foam — not the 1 inch that's sometimes assumed or under-quoted. A wall foamed at 1 inch might look complete, but it's only delivering about R-6, well under what an encapsulated crawlspace assembly needs.
If you're getting a spray foam quote, ask what R-value it's designed to hit, not just how many "kits" or how many inches. The inches only matter in relation to the R-value target.
